In
the early 1980s I got caught for illegal street racing and lost my
licence for 12 months. However, I took the opportunity to buy a $50
second hand guitar and taught myself to play. Within 12 months I was
getting up to do a song or two at the Lidcombe Hotel, but a lack of
confidence, combined with nerves, meant that I limited myself to
playing at home!
In
2012, after hearing about a songwriting contest on the country radio
show, I wrote a song called "The Local" and got into the
finals at the 2012 TCMF. After 30 years I returned to the Lidcombe
Hotel still battling nerves and sung the song with a local band I
went to Tamworth and won, thought, that’s it, I’ll never sing
again!
In
2018, at 60 years of age, I had a now
or never moment.
I started getting up at "The Bowlo” and doing a song or
two, or an opening acoustic set, with a couple of local bands. I
froze up on stage on more than one occasion, but with a heap of
support and encouragement from the local, I finally conquered
the nerves!
In
2022 I appeared on The
Voice
singing “Old Town Road”. Never tuned a chair, but again
it helped me greatly with my confidence! I have continued playing
with a group of “ragtag" local guitar players and now at
65 years of age I’m ready to release my first single!
