The Northerner is a California rock band shaped by the state’s deep punk rock roots. Led by singer and songwriter Nick Sherwood, the band plays loud, fast, and raw built on heartfelt lyrics and anthemic choruses that get stuck in your head. Their songs carry that familiar mix of youth and angst, digging into love, growing up, and change, while still holding onto a sense of hope. Their latest album, Echoes, has been picking up positive attention for doing exactly what it sets out to do: write great songs and play them like it matters. “Loving You Is Killing Me” was written about a family member who had recently gone through a divorce, and the difficulties of living in the thick of such tumultous times. Listening was one of the biggest ways that Sherwood was able to help, and this song is the result. “Fight” is a song that is much more literal than most realize: Sherwood’s son was about 6 months old, he was fighting him through basic care tasks. This period became an exercise in love and patience. The lyrics, "We can measure all our love by how much and how hard we're willing to fight", was Sherwood coming to the conclusion that he would never stop fighting for his son, and that nobody who loves someone should ever stop fighting for them
