In 1982, a single song could have catapulted the young Swiss singer and songwriter Olivia Gray (then simply Olivia) to global stardom overnight. The headline in the biggest swiss newspaper was already promising: "Kojak makes Swiss singer Olivia a world star." The background story was worthy of a movie: Brian Carter, the manager of Hollywood star Telly Savalas (known as "Kojak"), was looking for a follow-up single to his worldwide hit ”Some broken hearts will never mend.” Through the winding paths of the music business back then, he connected with the talented Swiss artist. Olivia composed the song ”Put Your Head Down Tonight,” which Telly Savalas subsequently recorded. The release seemed a mere formality.
But fate intervened: Carter’s label, BCM Records, was unexpectedly dissolved shortly thereafter. The finished recording vanished, and the dream was shattered. It was a huge disappointment for everyone involved. For four decades, the original master tape of Telly Savalas was considered lost. But just a few months ago, the incredible news arrived: The long-lost tape containing the recordings of the "Kojak" star resurfaced in England - and eventually made its way to Olivia Gray. Both Olivia and the renowned producer Urs Wiesendanger of the Powerplay Recording Studios were immediately thrilled by the quality of the historical recording and the timeless song.
To give this wild, 40-year- old story a fitting and modern ending, Wiesendanger made a creative decision: He re-produced the song - not just with Telly Savalas' vocals alone, but as a duet. With the help of modern AI technology and in consultation with Olivia Gray, the creative virtuoso was able to perfectly merge her voice with Savalas’ historical recording. The forgotten song «Put Your Head Down Tonight» is now celebrating its delayed and spectacular premiere - as a duet that has spanned decades.
