The Beard & The Bird is a Bi-Coastal Duo consisting of Jon Hasz (Vocals, Guitar, Slide) and Cat Hasz (Vocals and Upright Bass), who pair their unique style of Western swing with Milligan’s inspiring and poignant poetry to encourage others to pursue a joy filled life. The Beard and The Bird have been performing together since 2021. They appear regularly at venues throughout Southern California and on the East Coast around Buffalo, New York. Their musical genres span from 1920’s western swing to modern pop/folk with a Rockabilly twist, with both starting their musical careers in their small- town’s punk scene.
”Dust if you Must” is an adaptation of Jon Hasz's favorite poem by the same name written by Rose Milligan and recorded bi-coastally between Afterhours Studio in San Diego, CA and GCR Audio in Buffalo, NY. With influences of Bob Wills and Django Rhinehardt, Jon and Cat enlisted the talents of Tyler Westcott (Banjo) and John Aaron Troy (Clarinet) to fill out the arrangement during a recording session in the Fall of 2022 at the legendary GCR Audio Studio A.
They later added upright bass and harmony vocals in San Diego and lastly tracked Tony Econom on the drums. The original poem published by Rose Milligan on 15th September 1998 in the 21st edition of “The Lady," is a anthem to appreciate the small things, and to invest youthful time and energy into enjoyable pursuits.
